WOT July 2015 Youth Group news

Wycheproof Youth Page

This month the youth group had a working bee. We cleaned walls, the roof, both bathrooms and  kitchen.

On Sunday, 28 June at 10am we will be holding another working bee. We kindly ask that anyone interested come along, as our aim is to hold events that include both Charlton and Nullawil youth as well.

It would mean so much to the group to see people helping us get this room up and going for the next generation of youth.

Some of the jobs needed are washing walls, painting, some carpentry work, assistance with making new curtains and cleaning up outside.

The Wycheproof Youth Group would like to express our sincere thanks to Albie Harding for relocating the bee hive that was in the logs around the campfire area. Albie and his family are relatively new to Wycheproof and we welcome them to this community.

                            55g Caster Sugar
                            1 large egg
                            85g self-raising flour
                            1 tbsp. cocoa powder
                            55g plain chocolate
                            Icing sugar for dusting
Method:
1. Put 8 paper baking cases in a muffin tin, or place 8 double-layer paper cases on a baking sheet.
2. Put the margarine, sugar, egg, flour and cocoa in a large bowl and,  beat together until just smooth.
3. Spoon half the mixture into the paper cases. Using a teaspoon, make an indentation in the centre of each cake. Break the chocolate evenly into 8 squares and place a piece in each indentation, then spoon the remaining cake mixture on top.
4. Bake the cupcakes in a preheated oven, 190C for 20 minutes, or until well risen and springy to the touch. Leave to stand for 2-3 minutes before serving warm, dusted with sifted icing sugar.

WOT July 2015 On the beat with Leigh Johnstone : number plates advice

If either number plate on your car is hard to read consider ordering a new one from Vic Roads. Number plates must be clearly visible from at least 20 metres. If they are dirty they should be cleaned. If they are old they should be replaced.

If a number plate cover is fitted it must be clear, clean, untinted, flat over entire surface and have no reflective or other characteristics that would prevent the successful operation of a device approved for use in detecting traffic offences. In other words, if a speed camera can’t read your number plate, you are liable for a $148 fine and the loss of 3 demerit points.

I know that we all hate speed cameras but they have probably saved a lot of lives since they have been operating and one of those might have been yours!

The registered owner of a vehicle who is the holder of a credit card can even order number plates over the phone and have them mailed.

I have also been advised of an upcoming blitz on wearing seat belts and the use of a phone by hand when driving. Serial transgressors have now been warned!!

The fact that I’m “banging on” about number plates in this issue means that we have no serious crime apparent in the area which is great news.
        Stay safe and warm

WOT July 2015 Rural Living Strategy developed by Buloke Shire

The following is an extract from the Mayor’s report for June 2015. In it Buloke Shire Mayor, Cr Reid Mather, discusses the Rural Living Strategy, which was developed by the Buloke Shire Council, and it’s importance in creating awareness at State and Federal Government level of the disadvantages that many rural communities face.

“In simple terms, unless rural people have access to the basic services that should be available to all Victorians, we will see our smaller regional communities become more and more unlivable. In Buloke Shire we face this problem in our small communities every single day. We are doing everything we can to deliver the basic essential services, but we are falling short. Youth services, community transport, library services and child care services are just some examples of what our rural communities are missing out on.

The people living in our rural shires make a considerable contribution to the nation’s GDP, as well as paying rates, income tax and GST in the same manner as their metropolitan colleagues. So they should receive the same level of basic services their metropolitan colleagues enjoy. We need to do everything in our power to ensure that we, as Local Government, deliver the basic services that everyone, no matter where they live, is entitled to.

Now is the time for us to band together to advocate for the basic rights of rural residents. Alone, the problems we face can seem insurmountable. As a united voice, we can deliver a simple strong message – equal services for rural people - and get higher levels of government to bring about the changes that are necessary.”

WOT July 2015 Chamber Chatter with Tracey

I'm sure all will agree the rain has been good for business. Hopefully we get plenty more of it.

Great to see the market flyer growing, the more businesses we have advertising the bigger the market day for all. I will be contacting a few more to come on board for next month.

Pleasing to see continuing progress with shop front improvements.

Finally, as businesses, we must support the other businesses as much as possible.

That's it for this month, remember:
Businesses that support each other, grow a supporting community.

WOT July 2015 News with Amanda

This month I would like to talk about the fantastic community we live in and some of the services we have access to on a regular basis.

Last week, as I was walking home from the supermarket, I came across a mobile Hearing unit from the Wimmera region. I struck up a conversation with the lady in charge of this service who informed me that she had only seen two clients in the two hours she had been sitting there. Apparently signs were up down the street; however, I had neglected to see them.

The point is that we often complain about having to travel out of town for services, when actually some of them come to us, we just need to use them better. Optometrists come to Wycheproof, as well, we have regular access to physiotherapist’s, podiatrists, mental health support workers, dietitians and diabetes educators, just to name a few.

So what I’m trying to say is, think about using the services we have access to before travelling elsewhere. We also need to ask our medical specialists if we can have review appointments via Skype or Video conferencing as this would save us time and money.

As we know we have minimal access to transport options, and while investigations are being made into alternative sources of transport, we are a fair way off having a viable solution.

So where possible use our local services, because as they say……”Use it or lose it!”
