Public Speaking

Wednesday morning 22 February students from Year 5 to Year 12 presented their speeches in the Annual Public Speaking Competition. Mr Connolly allocated a special award for humour and having a "red hot go" and Xavier McKersie, Matilda Bish, Rowan Jones and Cian Polzin each received a block of chocolate in this category

Congratulations to the winning speakers: Year 5/6-Matilda Bish on the topic ‘Case Headers versus John Deere Headers’; Year 7/8- Ella Sheahan on the ‘Dangers of Soft Drinks’; Year 9/10- Equal winners Gemma Fawcett whose topic was ‘Male Domestic Abuse’ and Eloise Gretgrix whose topic was ‘The Failure of our Correctional Services’; and Year 11/12- Koen Phyland on the topic ‘What effect Trump's Administration will have on Australia.’

Swimming

During February primary students had swimming lessons at the Wycheproof pool to familiarise them with water safety and protocol.

Secondary students competed in the House Swimming Sports, with a win to Broadway, and then competed at the NCD Swimming Sports at St Arnaud. While Wycheproof did not have any winners at the St. Arnaud meet, students tallied enough places to earn the Standardised Aggregate Shield.

The 2017 School Captains, House Captains and Class Captains include School Captains , Joseph Fawcett and Mary-Anne Pollard, who will lead the way for all the junior representatives and look forward to a very productive year

Welcome to our community

Welcome to new manager at WCRC, Averyll Loft

During February we welcomed Averyll Loft as manager at the Wycheproof Community Resource Centre. Averyll hails from Queensland and is an experienced journalist, most recently working as Editor at The Guardian newspaper Swan Hill where she managed a busy newsroom. Averyll with her partner Josh Pellegrino and toddler Edie has made Wycheproof her home. 

Welcome to Jing Li

Chinese Assistant Jing Li has arrived from China for a year at Wycheproof P-12 College. She is keen to see and do as much as possible while here, so if you are going somewhere special and have room in the car she would be delighted with any opportunity to explore and learn about Wycheproof, surrounding towns, farming and Victoria.

Wycheproof P-12 College news- November 2016

The students from Wycheproof P-12 College have been  busy throughout October using all their creative skills to create some fabulous entries for the Wycheproof Show and the Racing Art and Craft Exhibition (RACE event).  

Many students won prizes for their work and all their contributions help to make these two events very  successful. On Friday 27 October, P-8 students ventured to the Wycheproof Shire Hall to view all the works of art in the RACE event.

Congratulations to Abby Morrison who won first prize in the Secondary Section of the RACE event and to the many students awarded 'Highly Commended' certificates.

Nude Food

 Under the guidance of secondary school nurse Jacinta Miller, staff and students were encouraged to think about the food they bring to school and the rubbish and waste that results from some items in the lunchbox. The students marked items for each day in their Nude Food Diary and points were awarded for bringing food in reusable containers without plastic wrap or wrappers that need to go in general rubbish. At the end of the week there was a talk and draw for prizes. It was a great effort by students. All students who had the most points went into a draw and winners were Jack Cowell (Prep-2), Isabelle Mulquiny (Years 2-4) and Angus Forrester (Years 7-8).

Walk to School month was October. The number of kilometres actively travelled by students is yet to be tallied.

Wycheproof P-12 College

Brains at school

On Thursday 11 August  the Years 2, 3 & 4 Integrated Studies class went to the science room and looked a sheep brains, which we got from the butchers. . We have been learning about the skull and bones in the body. At the science room we put on coats and goggles. Each table was given some brains on a tray. We looked at the nerves in the brain and the grey matter which we use to think with. We also talked a little about how the right side controls the left side and vice versa. Demi and Amara got to flip the brains first . The brain felt really cold and felt like jelly. We really liked the day. It was fun. Thank you Chalmers Butchers for donating the brains.

Super Hero &Villains Day

Every super hero you could imagine and some villains arrived at school on Friday 17 June. It was all in good fun and for charity as the Students Leadership Team had organised the day to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). Costumes ranged from the traditional Superman, Batman and the Hulk, to Minions and some newly created ones such as the Super Cat Ladies. At lunchtime the fun continued as students lined up to collect pizzas and drinks for a special treat.

This year the College has had two visits from the RFDS. During the first visit students saw inside the RFDS with their simulated aeroplane and the second visit was the dental service team providing dental checks for students. The dental team is due back in the near future to complete any dental treatments required.

Work Experience

During the last week of Term 2 Wycheproof P12 College supports the Year 10 and 11 students during work experience week. The Year 10 students find their own work in country regions while the Year 11s travel to Melbourne and stay in the city to familiarise themselves with city transport and accommodation. They also try out some of the many and varied restaurants for dining at night.

This year only two Year 10 students were working in Wycheproof and they have been employed by Bakery on Broadway. The remainder of the class were working in Bendigo with the exception of Billy Forrester who was in Swan Hill.

Children’s Book Week

Wycheproof P-12 College recognises the importance of reading for all students. Each morning the school set aside 10 minutes for quiet reading for all classes from Prep to Year 12. In late August the College joined with other schools and public libraries to celebrate Children’s Book Week. During the week various literacy activities were held to encourage students to participate including: shared reading, quizzes, and puzzles held in class time, school assembly and lunchtimes. The week concluded with students bringing along their favourite book and coming dressed as their favourite book character. Children’s Book Week began in 1945 and is now in its 70^th year.

So what are some of the students favourite books or authors? 

The Year 8 girls like the Cathy Cassidy series of Books. Paige Arnel (Year 3) likes “The Wishing Chair” by Enid Blyton.  Steph Mill (Year 11) is an avid reader of  Isabelle Allende and Erin Morgenstern books. The Grade 4 boys like “Skullduggery Pleasant”

…And what book charatcer will you be dressing up as on Friday?

Kasie is coming as a Harry Potter character. Max will be Spiderman and Ollie, the Hulk..while others are still debating between Pippa LongStocking and Where’s Wally?!

Mathletics

Every student at Wycheproof is enrolled in the Mathletics Program. This allows each child to participate in this activity at their year level either at hom or school. Mathletics can be accessed as often as you like. Certificates are awarded each week for those who gain 1000 points or more thus encouraging and promoting excellence in Maths. Each week the high achievers are listed in the School Newsletter. If you think this task may be too daunting for the little ones then check out the picture with Max Fawcett, Darcy Coles, Libby Thompson, Lana Fawcett and Tessa Fawcett with their certificates for 1000 points or more.

WOT June 2015 Wyche P-12 College news

Cross Country:
Well they are a fast bunch of students at Wycheproof P-12! (pictured left) The House Cross Country competition is now finished and in early May a team of students went to St Arnaud to compete in the North Central District event.  The weather was cold and drizzly at times but the competition was hot. 

Wycheproof runners did well and won the Standardised Pennant. As a result a number of students have earned a place to compete in the Zone final at St Arnaud. ...More in next WoT

Test tubes and beakers: Experiments in the science room are usually for the secondary students; however, on Wednesday 20 May, the Prep/1 class and the 2/3/4 students were invited to the science room by Mr Crockett.  

Do you know what happens to a balloon if you put some dry ice in it, tie it off and sit it on top of some water in a beaker? Well the little ones do. They watched it expand (blow up by itself) without any air. They also saw a chemical reaction when dry ice was placed in soapy water creating a volcano of bubbles. 

Thanks to Mr Crockett, these children had an early insight into some of the things that can be done in science. It was a great lesson!

 Teaching rounds: Wycheproof  P-12 College supports those currently studying towards becoming a teacher. At present Wycheproof two student teachers have been learning the ropes; Whitney Boyle is working with Allison Roll in the Grade 4/5/6 area and Luke Murray is in the secondary area working with Chris Duffy in Health and P.E.

It is great to have student teachers visit the school and we wish them all the best in their final years of study.
